Meet Gaston Alonso

Title: Software Engineergasto-IMG_1049

Where were you born? Mexico City, Mexico

New York or San Diego office? San Diego

Where did you go for college? San Diego State University

How did you get into software engineering? I was into fixing and putting together computers when I was in high school. I knew that I wanted to do something computer-related when it came to choosing my major so I went into Computer Science without really knowing what it was about. Once I started taking courses I found out it was more about math, logic and data and less about hardware, but I loved it and stayed.

What is your favorite thing about your career? That I can easily build things from scratch and can immediately see the results of my efforts. Once you become proficient at code, it’s like molding clay. I find the activity incredibly enjoyable and am very fortunate to be able to do it for a living.

gasto-IMG_1047How long have you worked at ScrollMotion? I started in January 2013, so about a year and half.

What brought you to ScrollMotion? A recruiter contacted me when I wasn’t really actively looking for a job at the time but came to the interview anyway. I saw promise in the concept behind SmartStudio and it looked like an interesting project to work on.

What do you like most about working at ScrollMotion? The flexibility with hours and dress code.

Who was the last person that called or texted you? My wife.

What do you do for fun outside of ScrollMotion? I have way too many hobbies but currently I’m into saltwater fishing and playing the bass and guitar. My wife and I also like to go to thrift stores and flea markets and collect things for fun or sell them for profit.

What kind of things do you collect? I like books, mostly non-fiction books on WWII, crafts, music, programming, and any book that can teach you a skill. My wife likes collecting Disney memorabilia.

What’s the wallpaper on your phone? The stock one. I’m very spartan when it comes to my personal stuff.

What is your favorite app on your phone besides ScrollMotion? The Bank of America app. It’s the app I use the most.

What is the last thing you searched for on Google? The most popular bonsai tree.

What fad do you wish would come back and which do you wish would stay gone forever?I would be delighted if jazz made a huge comeback and rap went away for good.

What music are you currently listening to? I’m currently into sea shanties and drinking songs, ‘pirate-sounding’ stuff in general, though I’m usually listening to metal with jazz and world music thrown in there as well.

gasto-FullSizeRender_1-1What TV show are you currently watching?Nothing right now, looking for the next show to watch!

What movie makes you laugh the most? The Gods Must Be Crazy. I can’t think about that movie without laughing.

What is your biggest pet peeve? Overly aggressive drivers, though I’m faulty of this myself.

What’s your favorite color and why? Gray because it’s elegant, mostly from looking at web design.

What is your guilty pleasure? Sea shanties.

What is your spirit animal? The raccoon. I find them adorable. I like how smart and persevering they are.

What worst gift you have ever received? Two pairs of socks: one pair bright yellow and the other pair bright red.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Invisibility.

How many countries have you been to? 3 countries: Mexico, the US, and Guatemala.
What’s something at the top of your bucketlist? I want to go to New Orleans. My wife and I are into Cajun culture and food.
What is your favorite food? Chocolate, in all forms.
What makes you happiest? Beer. I like craft beer, mostly IPAs and Porters.
What was the last book you read? The Hobbit.

What is the most important thing to remember in your work? Commas, closing parenthesis, and brackets.
Biggest threat to your productivity is… Conversations around me. Not because it bothers me, but because I start listening in and lose focus.
And you overcome that how? Headphones and sea shanties!
